Internships at the MPIIB

We offer research internships for bachelor and master students, internships in the science-supporting areas and internships for pupils in our communication team. Before you apply, please review all the requirements and information listed below.


Internships for students

Our institute is open to interested and committed bachelor and master students who would like to gain first-hand experience in the field of infection biological research and deepen their study focus. An internship at our institute typically lasts between one and three months.

The research groups decide independently on the allocation of places. Therefore, please take a close look at which research groups you are most interested in. Then, please send your application by e-mail directly to the corresponding research group.

Your application should contain the following documents:

  • cover letter
  • curriculum vitae
  • certificates and reports
  • any evidence of additional professional competences
  • possible references

It is important that you state in your cover letter why you are interested in this research group and what you expect from an internship there. Please keep in mind that the planning requires some time. You should therefore contact the relevant research group at an early stage, i.e. at least six months in advance. All documents should be sent as a pdf file not larger than 5 MB.

Unfortunately, the number of inquiries exceeds our capacities, so that not all inquiries can be answered positively. We ask for your understanding!

If you are not from Berlin, you have the possibility to stay in the guest house of the institute. If you are interested, please reserve an apartment as early as possible.


Internships in the science-supporting area

Our administration, IT, and communication teams are open to internships that have to be completed as part of training or studies. Please contact the specific area you are interested in and send your application by e-mail.

Your application should contain the following documents:

  • cover letter
  • curriculum vitae
  • certificates and reports
  • any evidence of additional professional competences
  • possible references

In your cover letter, please state why you would like to complete your internship in the relevant area, what you expect from the internship and what your time expectations are. All documents should be sent as a pdf file not larger than 5 MB.

Please keep in mind that the planning requires some time. You should therefore submit your application at an early stage, i.e. at least six months in advance.


Internships for school students

Unfortunately, for safety reasons, we cannot accept any pupils for an internship in the laboratory. 

Pupils who are interested in scientific content as well as in journalistic writing, the organization of events or communication via social media are offered the opportunity to "get a taste" of the day-to-day work in the communication team as part of an internship.

Your application should contain the following documents:

  • cover letter with indication of date conceptions
  • curriculum vitae
  • copy of the last certificate
  • accompanying letter from the school
  • work samples, if available

It is important that you state in your cover letter why you are interested in an internship with us and what you expect from it. Please apply early, i.e. at least three months in advance.

Unfortunately, our capacities are limited, so that we cannot fulfill all internship wishes. We ask for your understanding!
