Talk abstract:

The African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae and yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti largely rely on their exquisitely tuned sense of smell to hunt humans. We are applying genome engineering in these species to identify neural circuitry critical for mosquito attraction to human scent. Progress towards elucidating mosquito neural substrates driving attraction to human scent, chemosensory factors modulating mosquito host preference for some humans versus others and implications for pathogen transmission will be discussed.
