Talk abstract:

Neutrophils are abundant leukocytes with essential antimicrobial functions in tissues and at barrier sites. They release extracellular chromatin with immunostimulatory properties in the form of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). But what are the consequences of uncontrolled neutrophil activation in the vasculature? We examine this question in the context of malaria, an intravascular infection with the Plasmodium parasite. We demonstrate an unappreciated role for neutrophil-endothelium interactions in promoting malaria pathogenesis.
