Abstract:

As the primary guide to treatment and prognosis, microbiology diagnostics should implement new techniques to improve its cost-effectiveness and provide stronger impact on infectious disease management.Comprehensive knowledge of genetic markers will be essential for the development of novel molecular diagnostic tools. These will be bound to predict antibiotic resistance profiles as well as pathogenicity characteristics, far surpassing current diagnostic systems in their predictive power. They will lay the ground for the translation of new information into clinical use and support the emergence of much-needed more precise, predictable, and powerful healthcare tailored to individual patients.
