Pathogens are unpredictable. Our best hope for containing them rests with vaccines. It has taken barely a year from the publication of the genetic information of the new corona virus to the availability of ready-to-use vaccines - already one of the greatest success stories in medicine. Internationally renowned immunologist Stefan Kaufmann—developer of a vaccine against tuberculosis—traces the history of vaccination from its birth more than 200 years ago to the eradication of smallpox and the latest approaches to vaccines against cancer, and deals with vaccination risks and opponents.
