COVID-19 and Pandemic Threats

The founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Stefan H.E. Kaufmann, published a book on COVID-19 and future pandemic threats. This work builds on many years of expertise in the field of vaccine research and immunology as well as Stefan H.E. Kaufmann's 2007 book (updated 2016) on the growing epidemic danger, in which he predicted many of the problems that have become reality today. Stefan H.E. Kaufmann was Director of the Department of Immunology from 1993 to 2019, since 2019 he heads the Emeritus Group Systems Immunology at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen.

The book is part of the series "Sustainability" of the Hessian State Agency for Civic Education (Hessische Landeszentrale für politische Bildung) and only available in German. The blurb briefly outlines the contents:

„Covid-19 hat es deutlich gemacht: Das Buch der Infektionskrankheiten kann noch lange nicht geschlossen werden. Diese Broschüre beschreibt die zwei wichtigsten Bedrohungen: Pandemien durch neu- und wiederauftretende Seuchen sowie die Ausbreitung von Erregern mit Antibiotikaresistenz. Nur deutliche Änderungen, insbesondere Frühwarnsysteme und bessere medizinische Präventions- und Behandlungsoptionen können die nötige Wende herbeiführen. Diese Veränderungen kosten kurzfristig große Summen Geld, zahlen sich aber langfristig mehr als aus. Das Wissen und die finanziellen Möglichkeiten zu einem Richtungswechsel haben wir – jetzt ist Handeln gefragt.“
