How to apply

This year, we have 6 open PhD projects and are looking for highly motivated and passionate candidates with skill sets matching the projects, please check the project description and research group prior to application.

All applications will have to be submitted through our application platform that will open on 5 November, 2025 and close on 10 December, 2025 23:59 CET. Applications through email or post are not considered.

Application to the IMPRS-IDI is a straightforward six-step process via our portal:

1. 1. Check your eligibility (more details here)
   2. Register an account on our online application portal between 5 November and 10 December
   3. Confirm your account, login and fill out the application
   4. Name two referees to be contacted to upload a recommendation letter
   5. Upload all required documents (see below)
   6. Submit your application by 10 December, 2025 (referees have until 17 December to submit their references via the application system)

Prior to your application, please prepare the following information and documents to be submitted via our system:

• a formal CV
• your certificates & transcripts
• Language certificates (in case English is not your native language)
• the contacts (including email & phone) of two referees
• your research interests and motivation
• further supporting documents

You can ONLY apply by using the online application platform. Before being able to apply, you first need to register and verify your user account. Once this is done, you can start your application.

IMPORTANT: You do not have to submit your application in one go but can come back to it. However, please make sure you always save the entered data before changing to the next page or before logging-out. All saved information will be available to continue the application process at a later time. Be sure to submit your application before 23:59 CET on 10/12/2025. Registered but not submitted applications will not be considered.

Further instructions

• The online application must be completed in English.
• Ensure that your contact details (email and postal address) remain valid throughout the entire application process.
• You must provide two referees in the application form. They will be contacted automatically once their details are saved, so please inform them in advance. Referees can submit their references until 17 December 2025.
  Applications without two submitted references will not be considered.
• Select up to three preferred research groups/projects. The order of your selection determines who evaluates your application, but this choice is not final. Candidates invited to the online panel sessions may still adjust their preferences after meeting the faculty.

Use of AI: You may use AI tools to improve language and style, but not to generate or change the content of your application. Any AI use must follow Good Scientific Practice and be declared in the designated form field („additional information“ tab in the portal).
